2 - 1 DEFEAT AT MORECAMBE

MORECAMBE 2  v  1  VICS

Vics reverted to a 3-51 system for the visit to Christie Park and looked much more comfortable. The team overall played much better than in the defeat to Cambridge and could count themselves unlucky not to have got a point.

Vics opened well and played good football from the back and through midfield but the problem throughout the evening was the attack looking lightweight. The first shot fell to Byrne but he put it wide and then Lloyd did the same at the other end. We nearly went ahead on the quarter hour when a Christian Smith header off a Byrne free kick grazed the post. However, after this solid start Morecambe had a ten minute spell when they looked dangerous and it was in this spell that they went ahead. Blinkhorn tested Connett with a shot that he saved well at the expense of a corner. However, from the ensuing cross Blinkhorn was there to head home.

On 24 minutes Connett made a great save off the same player and from then on Vics regained their composure. By the end of the half Vics had had as much, if not more, possession than Morecambe. The difference was that the home team had a finisher whereas Vics good build up play fell away near goal. However, at half time it looked as if Vics could get something from the game.

The second half again saw Vics start well. Shaw had a good shot saved and on 55 minutes Danny Mayman lobbed the keeper perfectly only to see Bentley head clear from under the bar. As in the first half Morecambe then had another good spell and Connett again saved well this time from Charlton but as before the home team pressure faded and on 69 minutes Battersby had a good header that was only half cleared and it fell to Mayman who scored low into the corner. This was no more than Vics deserved but their joy was short lived. 3 minutes later Roberts conceded a foul, and got a yellow card, and from the free kick Connett came for the ball but missed it and Blackburn hooked the ball into the empty net.

Still Vics looked dangerous and the defence opened up in front of Byrne on 80 minutes but he pulled his shot well wide. Roca and Dean replaced Smith and Brayson and Roca and Byrne then both shot wide from good positions and with those chances Vics hope of a point were gone.

Right at the death another ex-Vics player, Dave McNiven should have added a third but headed wide.

After last Sunday this was a much-improved display and the team could at least go off with some pride and with a little luck could have had a point as well.
