CONFERENCE Premier outfit Newport County await in the Quarter Finals of the FA Trophy, as Vics put aside off the pitch issues with this thumping of the Conference South Beavers at Nantwich Town’s Weaver Stadium.
Two goals in either half saw Vics move to within two rounds of a trip to Wembley with a Nathan Woolfe first half double, and goals in the second period from Wayne Riley and Kyle Armstrong from the penalty spot.
It was Paul Simpson and Alan Wright’s first game at the helm, and Vics who had not played for two and a half weeks due to freezing weather conditions raced out of the blocks, and Chris Budrys produced a save out of Craig Ross that was only parried straight into the path of Riley who steered in the rebound, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
The pressure continued from the Vics in the form of some terrific passing football and a series of corners, and to no one’s surprise the lead was taken when Nathan Woolfe slotted home from the edge of the box on fifteen minutes, after Hampton had failed to clear a Lewis Short throwing.
The goal made Vics even more dominant and a duet of chances were formulated in an attempt to double the lead, first Jordan Johnson’s drive from twenty yards out clipped a post after taking a deflection, and from the resulting corner Riley was at the near post to tee up Kearney who forced Ross to save with his left hand.
Chances continued to come with ease and Budrys should have profited from yet another Hampton failure to clear a corner, prodding wide from point blank range. Then after Short had earned a free kick, captain, Ian Kearney turned a defender inside the penalty area and shot into the side netting.
Moments later, Vics did manage to deservedly double their lead, when Nathan Woolfe struck beautifully into the top corner from twenty five yards out on thirty six minutes.
Hampton, with the wind against them made a brighter start to the second half and created their first attempt on goal, as an out swinging free kick from Craig Johnson saw Ben Hinchliffe punch away.
But despite this, Riley made it 3-0, smashing home a loose ball into the back of the net from a corner on fifty two minutes.
Vics were now rampant and it was almost 4-0, when Woolfe swept a past his marker and fed through John Disney who saw his shot saved out for a corner by Ross.
David Tarpey gave Hampton a lifeline on fifty seven minutes, volleying home a loose ball past the outstretched arms of Hinchliffe, after Vics defence had been caught out on the counter attack.
The Conference South Beavers sensed an unlikely comeback and Vics were reminded of as much; when the dangerous Tarpey produced a top draw save out of Hinchliffe.
Vics looked to respond and came close, when Woolfe struck wide after Budrys had set him up. But the same player made amends by turning past Ferrell and being obstructed in his path as referee P. Bankes pointed to the penalty spot. Armstrong coolly slotted home into the top corner to restore Vics three coal cushion on sixty seven minutes.
The rest of the game petered out towards its inevitable conclusion, although Tom Hickey did manage to shoot narrowly over from twenty five yards for Hampton, and a Vics side that had played in a free flowing style all night with Woolfe and Johnson pulling the strings behind Budrys, could have scored again when Ryan Wade’s free kick had to be saved by Ross after evading everyone, and the same player’s cross was headed wide by Michael Clarke as another chance was spurned.
