Northwich Victoria 1 - 1 Ilkeston - FAT 3QR

Both sides will try again in a replay at the New Manor Ground on Monday evening, after a share of

the spoils in an entertaining encounter at the Victoria Stadium.

Joe Wilcox headed Ilkeston into a fifty eighth minute lead, before a thunderbolt from Ryan

Wade restored parity on eighty one minutes.

Vics boss Andy Preece made a number of changes from the team that lost 2-0 in midweek,

John Disney came in for Cliff Moyo at full back; Tom Smyth returned from injury to replace

Michael Roddy with Kyle Armstrong dropping back into the midfield; forward Michael

Clarke replaced Chris Budrys and Paul Ennis deputised for the unavailable Jordan Johnson.

In a lively opening between two sides playing with the confidence you would expect from top

of the league teams in their respective leagues, the trickies came close to taking the lead, Tom

Field forced new signing Alex Archer to save a powerful shot from the edge of the box.

Ilkeston looked fast on the break; one move resulted in them attacking with numbers and

after being put through, Darryl Thomas’s shot was saved by Ben Hinchliffe before he was

thwarted again by Hinchliffe from the rebound.

This was an end to end encounter; Wayne Riley’s looping narrowly evaded the far post from

Nathan Woolfe’s cross as Vics pushed for the lead.

The Robin’s wingers attacked Vics full backs all of the first half, loanee James Reid from

Telford dispossessed Lewis Short and gave himself space, but his shot sailed wide.

The first half was proving even, Short’s cross from the left was headed narrowly wide by

Clarke and Woolfe’s free kick after Disney had been pushed missed the target.

Vics then broke with pace, Woolfe found Field with a lovely ball over the defence, Field

turned his marker on the left hand edge of the box and delivered a fantastic ball, Clarke could

not quite get to it as Ryan Wilson managed to heave the ball off the line.

The Ilkeston keeper Archer was to be tested again, Disney seeing his twenty five yard

shot tipped over for a corner.

Vics began to assert some control and ended the half strongly, Riley’s effort from the edge of

the box drifted wide.

The second half started at the same enthralling speed of the first half, James Cullingworth

gave the ball away in the Ilkeston defence, Short pounced but saw his shot go wide for a goal

kick.

The men in green and white continued the period of dominance they enjoyed at the end of the

first half, Ennis soared past his marker and produced an excellent cross, Woolfe’s attempted

overhead kick sailed over the cross bar.

Rather from the run of play Ilkeston took the lead, James Reid’s cross from inside the box on

the left was met home from the head of Jamie Wilcox and under the despairing dive of

Hinchliffe.

Ilkeston were now buoyant from taking the lead, and having the backing of a large away

following with a significant vocal voice, but Vics continued to look the better team as Tom

Smyth’s shot from the edge of the box after a scramble, went into the grateful grasp of

Archer.

The home side continued to create chances and get closer, Budrys headed straight into the

keeper from a Short throw.

Vics could have had a penalty on seventy six minutes, Wade followed up a pass from

Woolfe with a bursting run, and appeared to have been brought down by Robins keeper

Archer, but instead the forward was booked by referee J. Brooks for diving.

The same player equalised for Vics five minutes later, Budrys brought the ball down for

Wade to hit a thunderbolt on the half volley from twenty five yards out that went in off the cross

bar.

Vics ended the game on the front foot, Tom Smyth headed narrowly over the bar from a

corner but they could not find the crucial winning goal.
