12/03/1938 Vics played Manchester North end at the drill field, the vics team was GAIL, ALLPORT, WOOTTON, TOMLINSON, WILLIAMS, CROMPTON, DICKENS, GREEN, JONES, WORSWICK, LAWRENSON. vics won 6-2. just a few notes from the programme."during the week an article appeared in one of the (daily's) concerning the financial position of Cheshire League's clubs. For the information of our own supporters, by clearing off long standard liabilities, has improved its financial status by approximately £400 if this progress can be maintained or approved upon and there is no reason why it shouldn't, during the next 4 years the club will be in a very healthy position. The question is, the following Saturday Wittion were to play a Cheshire senior cup semi final at the Drill Field, who did they play? foot note, two advertisements from the programme were H.CAPPER high class gents hair dresser and tobacconist 24 London road Northwich. P.D PRESTON news agents and stationer Chester Road Hartford.

Toddy Always up for a challenge (you have to be to be a Vics supporter) and this one did make me have to hunt through the archive boxes.

The 1937 /38 season had both Witton and Vics still playing in the Cheshire League. Witton finishing 6th and Vics trailing them in 8th.
Witton’s record read played 42 won 20 drawn 7 lost 15 104 goals for 68 against 47 points
Vics record read played 42 won 19 drawn 6 lost 17 86 goals for 79 against 44 points.
Tranmere Rovers Res being crowned Champions that season.
The Cheshire County League was a football league founded in the North West of England in 1919, drawing its teams largely from Cheshire, surrounding English counties and North Wales. Witton and Northwich both being Founder Members having both played in the Lancashire Combination the previous season.
Initially the league was dominated by the reserve teams of Football League clubs, but as the Central League became established for these teams, the non-league clubs won every title after 1938. Witton being crowned Champions in seasons 1948/49. 1949/50 and 1953/54. Northwich being crowned Champions in season 1956/57.
The outbreak of World War II in 1939 led to the league being split into Eastern and Western sections with the winners of each playing for the overall championship in 1939–40, with the league then closing down for the duration of the combat until re-starting in 1945.
In 1968 the league lost several clubs to the newly formed Northern Premier League. Despite this the league expanded in 1978 by adding a Division Two, but in 1982 the league ceased to exist after it merged with the Lancashire Combination to form the North West Counties Football League.
To enter the final of The Cheshire Senior Cup for the second successive season Witton would have to overcome one of the best teams in the league Crewe Alexandra Reserves who had only been beaten 8 times in 32 games. (Witton had beaten Vics on the way to the Semi-final beating Vics 4-2 in a replayed 2nd Round game having drawn the first game 1-1 at The Drill Field) Extra time could not produce a winner at the Drill Field with the stalemate score of 0-0. Witton should possibly have won the game in the first half but could not take advantage of the wind in their favour. Long periods of the half being battled out in the Crewe penalty box. The team that day being: Newton, Whitehead, Schofield, Watkinson, Flavell, Allmark, Cheetham, Douglas, Brain, Challenger and Wright. The Crewe team was Prince Turnbull Wilson Taylor Cope Major Watson Dando Essex Cobourne & Jones.

Crewe being Victorious in the replay the following Wednesday at Winsford beating Witton 1-0 in front of a crowd reported to be 2,500.. With extra time looming Dando broke the deadlock to put Crewe into the final. Both teams made 1 change from the Saturday game with White replacing Wright for Vics (possible misprint) and Waring replacing Watson for Crewe. Waring had scored for the first team on the Saturday in their 4-2 victory over York City in the 3rd Division North at Gresty Road in front of a crowd of 4961.

Crewe went onto play Congleton in the final losing 2-1

Witton reached the 1st Qualifying round of the FA Cup this season and although losing, the club kept an interest in the Cup with ex player Frank Gallimore winning a winners medal playing for Preston North End who beat Huddersfield Town in the final.
