DVNS No.190

DISTANT VICS NEWSLETTER NUMBER 190 25th SEPTEMBER 2003 TEAM NEWS Shaun Came broke his foot and sustained ligament damage playing for the reserves last Friday night. Initial indications are that he will be out for over 3 months. Better news on Mark Foran who has been having hamstring trouble. He should be available to play in this Saturday's vital "6 pointer" against Margate. This game will be played at Dover's Crabble Ground (now known as The Hoverspeed Stadium) as Margate are still groundsharing whilst their ground is rebuilt. There is the possibility of one more loan signing joining us. The Chronicle reports that Steve will have to trim the size of his squad to stay within the budget restrictions imposed by the new Conference rules which limit a club's expenditure on players to 65% of income. Steve is expected to do this at the end of the month. So far no players have officially left the club but one is expected to confirm his departure in the next week. Next Wednesday sees Vics away to Tranmere in the first round of the Cheshire Senior Cup. Next Tuesday night the Vics Youth Team continue their FA Youth Cup exploits with a trip to Bradford side Thackley. The reserves host Chorley at Moss Farm on Saturday KO 12.0 noon. CLUB NEWS Ben Connett received rave reviews for his display in goal for the reserves against Morecambe last Friday. After the unfortunate injury to Shaun Came Vics had a man sent off and Connett had a superb game as Vics held on for 0-0. The Academy side has also kicked off their season. They won 4-1 against N. Birmingham last week but lost 1-2 to Worcester City yesterday. Vics have taken delivery of a Kia car thanks to a new sponsorship deal between Gallaghers car dealership and the Conference. Steve Davis and Dave Stone received the car keys on behalf of the club. A final reminder that this weeks Fans Meeting has had to be put back. A new date will be announced quickly. The coach to Margate leaves Queen Street at 9.0am on Saturday. Price £14 and £12 for concessions. For those of you unable to travel remember that SILK FM (106.9fm) will carry live half time and full time reports from Dover. VICTORIA STADIUM The actual pitch should have been seeded today - look out for a nice green "sheen" in a couple of weeks! The new power supply should be coming in soon and will be completed in October. Equipment needed for the new electrics will be arriving soon and the housing over the equipment will also be built soon. All legal arrangements that need to be made concerning the short term disruption of the public footpath that runs across the site have been completed. Work on the new grandstand is about 3-4 weeks behind schedule but this is not serious and does not pose a threat to the necessary completion date of 1st April 2004. The steelwork and main structure of the stand should be done in a 6-8 week period and once the roof is on the internal work can commence. The main structure should be completed by Christmas. The Danebank, on the other hand, is ahead of schedule. All the roof steelwork has been completed and the crush barriers have been welded into place. Vics are still awaiting the delivery of 2 new small concrete units to complete the work around the new entrance formed at ground level in the middle. The roof covering cannot be completed until this is done as it would restrict access to the crane needed to lift them in. It's probably worth remembering that the April 1st deadline is the date by which Vics must have a usable football ground. It does not mean that every last bit of decoration etc has to be completed but it must be able to stage a game. ROUND AND ABOUT Saturday sees the 2Q Round of the FA Cup. Locally Witton host Wakefield and Emley, Altrincham visit Phil Wilson's Lancaster and Winsford go to Whitby. This is the stage where the feeder league premier divisions join. Dagenham's manager, Gary Hill is embroiled in a row that has seen him accused of making racist remarks after a recent game. Black players Mark Stein and Mark Smith have left the club as a consequence. 2 ex-Premiership players may be moving into the Conference. Keith Graydon, ex-Sunderland has joined Scarborough on non-contract terms and Tamworth are interested in Paul Kitson ex-Newcastle. Exeter's director of football Steve Perryman has rejected the chance to take up a similar role at Brentford - a club he once served as manager. SEEN ON THE INTERNET Nationwide Conference Site - 21/9/03 Northwich manager Steve Davis was pleased with his side's battling display as the Vics came from behind to draw 1-1 with Morecambe. It was only Northwich's third goal at home this season, but it proved to be enough to claim their first point in six games. "I was delighted with the way we came back and thought it was an improved performance," said Davis. "Morecambe are a fair side and when teams have gone a goal up against us here they have kept things tight and we have found it difficult to get back into the game. But we even had chances to win." BBC Non-League site - 24/9/03 Northwich Victoria boss Steve Davis feels his players need to be mentally stronger to halt their slide down the Nationwide Conference table. The Vics' 4-0 defeat at high-flying Chester on Tuesday night was their sixth defeat in seven games and left them second-from-bottom of the table. And Davis is looking for better when his side go to fellow strugglers Margate on Saturday. "In the first half at Chester we played well and more than matched them. But in the second-half I was disappointed at the way we crumbled," Davis said. "I don't like heads going down and they've got to be mentally stronger than that. "I've stuck with the players but they need to start putting it right. We've got to start performing for 90 minutes. "We will keep working with them, try and tighten it up and strive to put things right. "The game at Margate is a massive game now. We've got to go there and get something." A win in Kent would lift the Vics above Margate and Davis would like to add another striker to his squad before the weekend. "We're still not as much of a threat up front as I'd like us to be. The difference between the top and the bottom, apart from the finance, is a bit of quality in the final third," he added. Nationwide Conference Site - 25/9/03 Northwich Victoria boss Steve Davis has called for a renewed effort from his players after a sixth successive defeat, a 4-0 loss at Chester City. The Vics are 21st in the Nationwide Conference, with just one win from their first ten games and Davis was upset at the spirit of his side at the Deva Stadium. After the latest setback, Davis said: "In the first half at Chester we played well and more than matched them, but in the second half I was disappointed at the way we crumbled. "I don't like heads going down and they've got to be mentally stronger than that. "I've stuck with the players but they need to start putting it right. We've got to start performing for 90 minutes. "We will keep working with them, try and tighten it up and strive to put things right. "We're still not as much of a threat up front as I'd like us to be. The difference between the top and the bottom is a bit of quality in the final third." YANKEE Still no winner, 2 winning codes (due to dead heat) 3254 and 7254 unissued. - next week's jackpot is £1400. 14 trebles won £28 each: Messrs Garnett, Bentley, Smith, Burton, Thomas, Parfitt, Biddle, Oakes, Ashley, Baxter, Bain, Wakefield, Steadman and Edwards.
