DVNS No.165

DISTANT VICS NEWSLETTER NUMBER 165 3rd April 2003 Vics host Scarborough with a fully fit squad on Saturday. The only minor problem Jimmy Quinn has is that the 3 players he has signed are all, currently, on loan. Conference rules only allow 2 loan players in the side for any one game so it is likely that Jamie McGuire will be the "missing" one on Saturday. Jamie, Gary Owen and Damien Whitehead are all on a month's loan which takes us up to the end of the season. However, it is a strong possibility that Damien and Gary could sign permanently. Gary lives in Connah's Quay and wants to go part time. According to The Chronicle he has already indicated that he would like to stay with Vics. He was club captain at Doncaster and played in nearly every game last season but has failed to keep his place lately after injury. Jimmy has already stated that he is looking to Damien to show what he can do in the period he has at Vics. He was a prolific goalscorer before he signed for Macclesfield and scored 15 goals for them. However, his spell at Leigh has not been as successful and his future could be with Vics. Also interested in returning to Vics is keeper Gary Kelly, the full story on that in below in the "Seen on the Internet" section. Leaving Vics on loan is centre back Danny Jarrett who has signed for Winsford for a month. He scored on his debut in their 3-1 win over Atherton Collieries. The final word on Greg Blundell is that Bristol Rovers offered £50,000 for him last week, which Vics accepted. However, Greg rejected the personal terms offered and opted for a better deal for him at Doncaster where he is reportedly receiving a four figure salary every week. The club have not disclosed the fee received but The Chronicle report that the total would be £25,000 only if Doncaster get promoted. Vauxhall Motors will also receive a share of the "profit" Vics make - if any. They sold him to us for £10,000 two years ago. Vics academy side failed to win their league by the narrowest of margins - one goal more during the season would have seen them champions! An update on long-term injury victim Val Owen. He has just been given the go ahead to start training in the gym. There is no chance of him returning this season but he should be ok for the next. His jaw was badly broken in 2 places and had to be wired together - meaning a liquid diet for a long period. Val lost 1 ½ stones in weight during this time. Les Esling has announced his intention to "retire" from his position as "webmaster" on Vics official web site. Unfortunately Simon Ellison, who helps him, is unable to step into his shoes and therefore we need someone, or a small group of people, to take over from him. Can you help? It involves about 5-10 hours a week. For someone interested in the club, with computer skills and a little time this is a really rewarding job. Equally, split down between a few people it is a much quicker job. In this day and age it does not have to be someone who lives in Northwich. ANY OFFERS? Contact Distant Vics, or Les himself via the web site. The final of the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup against Witton has been confirmed as Tuesday 15th April. There had been speculation that the game could be moved due to the televising of a Man Unt game on the same night. They now play on the Wednesday. Victoria Stadium As you were told earlier in the week the club have now completed the purchase of the land from Cheshire County Council to build the new stadium having received the first payment for the Drill Field. The first evidence of building was the installation of the offices, in the shape of a portacabin, on the site last Friday. The "work" itself is still behind the scenes, although there will be visible evidence in the very near future. This week has seen more meetings and the finalising of the plans for the heating and plumbing. Seen on the Internet. Nationwide Conference Site 1/4/03 Veteran goalkeeper Gary Kelly has not ruled out a return to Northwich Victoria next season, having joined Sheffield United for the remainder of the current campaign. The 36-year-old custodian made seven Nationwide Conference appearances for the Vics before leaving for South Yorkshire on deadline day. However, he may be back with Jimmy Quinn's side again, as the Vics boss confirmed: "He wants to come back and play for us next year. "He did a terrific job while he was here and with the experience he's got, he was just what we needed." Kelly's departure led to the recall of Matthew Parry for the 2-1 home win over Telford United last Friday. Forthcoming Events Steve Davis's football school for kids on 22, 23 and 24th April. £10 per day or £25 for all three. It is planned to hold the, now, annual Distant Vics "do" after the Barnet game.
