Northwich Victoria 2 - 3 Newport County

BLUE Square Bet Premier outfit Newport County overturned a two goal deficit in the last half hour, to complete a most unlikely comeback, and progress through to the Semi-Finals of the FA Trophy.

Substitute Jake Harris was the inspiration for the South Wales Exiles with a brace and Nat Jarvis’s thumping header secured a memorable turnaround, leaving Northwich heartbroken.

For the first hour of the game, Northwich outplayed their higher ranked opponents to the extent that they found themselves two goals up and dreaming of a mouth-watering last four tie against a Conference Premier giant.

Ryan Wade once again excelled in a big occasion, terrorising full back David Pipe and chipping in with a wonder goal that seemingly put the game to bed.

Northwich made a bright start and it was Wade’s cross that had Glynn Thomspon in the Newport goal in all sorts of problems, with his defence failing to clear and the ball falling to Nathan Woolfe, who crossed back into the box and Chris Budry’s power header was saved by Thompson.

Then Budrys almost assisted in a goal, flicking on Woolfe’s swinging cross to Wayne Riley, who blazed over the crossbar.

Northwich continued to enjoy plenty of possession and Riley could have done better than volley wide from Nathan Woolfe’s cross, after David Fitzpatrick’s neat pass had sent Woolfe through down the left.

Newport settled down a little and created their first real chance from Elliot Buchanan’s shot from the edge of the area, but Ian Kearney was there to fend the ball off the line.

But Ian Kearney’s header from Wade’s corner gave Northwich a deserved lead, the captain helped on Nathan Woolfe’s flick on during its path to goal into the back of the net.

Newport boss, Justin Edinburgh reacted quickly at the start of the second half by taking Elliott Buchanan off for Paul Rodgers, who moved to full back and Pipe dropped into his more natural position down the right of the midfield.

Not that his plan paid off , as Northwich doubled their lead from the kick off, Wade was given far too much space and ran ten yards, before smashing the ball home superbly into the top corner of the net from twenty five yards.  It was a stunning goal in every way and capped off a fine afternoon for Wade and Northwich at this point, who were running Newport ragged with their fine brand of quick, high tempo, passing football.

Edinburgh again knew he had to do something and Harris replaced Romone Rose on fifty two minutes, little did he know how effective the substitution would turn out to be in the outcome of this incredible game.

Eight minutes later, his man delivered as he headed in Andrew Hughes free kick at the back post, after Ben Hinchliffe in the Northwich goal came questionably out to try and punch the delivery away.

Northwich had to respond and did, the source was once again Wade who crossed, only for Budrys’s header to be saved by Thompson.

Newport looked a far more competent side with the introduction of the substitutions, and came close to equalising, when a run from Sam Foley saw him shoot from twenty five yards out and produce a fine save out of Hinchliffe.

The pressure continued from Newport and the gulf in league positions began to show, as Northwich began to increasingly sit back and let Newport attack them, Darryl Knight especially gave John Disney a hard time down the left, and it was his cross that saw Newport equalise in the eighty fifth minute, as Harris once again popped up to poke the ball into the net.

Newport attacked with numbers and the onslaught continued, it seemed almost certain that Newport would score again and that is exactly what they did, when some wonderful play saw Lee Baker’s cross expertly thumped in from the head of Nat Jarvis.

Jarvis was the hero as Newport have now reached  the final four of the Trophy for the first time, and Northwich were left to reflect on what could have been from an excellent cup run this season.
