Southport 1 (Fowler 58)
Vics 2 (Carr 12 51)
Vics impressive away form continued with another victory. And although Southport rallied towards the end, few would deny that Steve Burr's men were deserved victors.
Gareth Griffiths and Richard Battersby took to the field in place of the injured Payne and McCarthy. But that did not stop the Vics from starting from where they had left off in the final 45 minutes at Burton. A quality 45 yard pass from Elliott set up Byrne but his shot was saved. A superb move involving Mayman and then Allan ended with Brayson shooting wide. Mayman was once again the potential provider with a teasing cross that Carr was inches away from meeting in front of an unprotected goal. Almost inevitably it was the same partnership that give Vics a 12th minute lead. Mayman won the ball and found Allan and he forged forward to measure a squared pass to the advancing CARR and he tucked his shot inside the post. Vics continued to dominate and could have added a second but a back to form Carr lifted his shot over the bar after once more being set up by the equally impressive Allan. Smith threatened on a couple of occassions for the home side but Vics maintained control and Allan was only prevented from doubling their lead before the break by another fine save.
The second half was barely eleven minutes old before a deserved second goal materialised. And it was the Allan - CARR partnership that again worked the oracle with the latter converting the former's right wing cross. This did provoke an eventual, if belated, response from the home side and they were first unfortunate to have a Maamria shot strike the bar before FOWLER was able to capitalise on an initial Ryan Brown error to reduce the arrears and set up a potentially grandstand finish. That ought to have been avoided when Vics were awarded a penalty for handball but Brayson hit his spot kick wide by the proverbial "mile". Otherwise Vics dealt relatively comfortably with what Southport could throw at them, although they once again were indebted to the woodwork which denied a late Douglas strike. That having been said, anything other than maximum points would have been rough justice.
