Vics are reported, by the Chronicle, to be interested in two of Witton’s players, probably centre back Brian Pritchard who has previous experience at higher levels and 20yr old left back Mark Styles. Jimmy Quinn has accepted that we have looked at “one of them” but would not say which one. Remember the speculation about Kevin Street from Crewe a couple of weeks ago? Although there was nothing in the rumour at the time he is reported to be dissatisfied with lack of first team opportunities at Crewe and would be interested in a loan move somewhere to get back to first team football.
Jimmy Quinn believes that he has a rare commodity in new striker John Dawson. The burly 18-year-old was signed from Nantwich Town last week and the Vics boss admits that Dawson is an exciting prospect.
"He is a big and ugly forward," commented Quinn.
"John is a big strapping lad who I have watched for some time, and I've seen a hell of an improvement in him. We still need to do some work on him but we'll get him trim.I know from my time as a manager in the Football League with Swindon and Reading how difficult it is to find a big centre-forward who can hold the ball up. There is a lack of that decent type of player. He can be whatever he wants to be, it is up to him. But he's a nice lad and he wants to learn and we'll work on him.
(He didn’t look particularly “ugly” to me!! I hope I never get on the wrong side of our manager if this is how he describes the one’s he likes!)
Nothing new on the ground, but 3 letters in the local press, 2 for moving and 1 against. More significantly the EGM at Witton called by Terry Warrender is set for 17th September and there are 2 motions. The first is to review their present financial position but the second is to recommence talks with Vics about ground sharing. This meeting has been called only a month before the AGM was due suggesting some urgency. He is believed to be extending his business interests to Northwich and moving closer to the town. Although he is still saying nothing and there has been no contact with Vics he is believed to have been in touch with other unhappy Witton shareholders. Current speculation is that he wants to “do a Max Griggs” with Albion and ourselves, or just sell up to get his money back. He needs the backing of 51% of the shares sold – and has 50,000 of the 106,000 he needs. If ground sharing is back on the agenda it could only be by Vics buying Wincham Park and developing it of by them gaining planning permission for housing to have any money left after a sale and payment of debts. The planning decision could be the difference between a current valuation of £650,000 and possibly £2m.
Jimmy Quinn is the first “Manager of the Month” this season for leading Vics to the top of the table with 3 wins and a draw in August.
“Looking down from that lofty position,” said Quinn wryly, "gave me a nose bleed." He also admitted: "Maybe we are in a false position."
He reckons that the main title contenders this season will be Dagenham, Yeovil, Boston, Stevenage and Doncaster.
To more local issues. Firstly I have “blitzed” the Vics web site and mailed everyone on it in an attempt to expand Distant Vics into the town. Locals will not be included in our e-mail group, at least not to start with, so as to avoid swamping everyone with mail. There has been an excellent response from DV’s with replies, already, from York, Liverpool, London, Derbyshire, Spain, Florida, Greece and New Zealand. All have had a lengthy description of what DV is all about and some are already receiving this newsletter. Look out for new names and make them welcome! Secondly, a request from Commercial Manager Brian Edge. He will be running a raffle in the next few weeks. Prizes which will include a shirt signed by Michael Owen and a football signed by David Beckham. Could anyone sell tickets in the area where they live? Let Brian know at the club or mail me and I will act as go-between. Thirdly, some admin! Is there anyone getting this newsletter who is not in the e-mail group and wants to be? If so contact me on 01630 673457 if you want a chat or on
peter-ros@...
Finally, the “sponsor a goal” scheme – or whatever!
I have no preference but if you want to go with the weekly “bet” on say 3 Conference results as an alternative.
and would be willing to pay 50p a week then I will organise it. You can send a cheque for, say £5, for 10 weeks or let me know by e-mail and pay me when you see me at games and I will fund it until I collect (trusting soul that I am !) 50p buys you 1 set of predictions a week, we add them all up and we bet on the 3 most popular. No accumulators just one bet a week and all winnings to Brian Edge’s sponsorship scheme. Might be more fun. Yes or no by Monday 17th September.
AT LAST someone has won the Yankee - £2,600, and 5 others won £10 each for a treble. None of them are DV’s.
Nuneaton match report out about 7.30pm on Saturday.
